Matica Bio, VaxDome partner on antigen-agnostic antiviral-vaccine hybrids

The collaboration will support process development, analytical development and cGMP clinical material production for VaxDome’s zIFV platform.

Matica Biotechnology has entered a partnership with VaxDome to support development of antigen-agnostic antiviral-vaccine hybrid candidates.

Under the agreement, Matica Bio will provide process development, analytical development and production of non-GMP and cGMP clinical materials. The work will be carried out at Matica Bio’s purpose-built facility in College Station, Texas.

This is relevant because vaccine development is increasingly being shaped by the need for flexible platforms that can respond to fast-changing viral threats. Traditional vaccine development often depends on identifying, characterising and updating antigens against specific viral strains. Antigen-agnostic approaches aim to provide broader protection when viruses mutate or when pathogen information is incomplete.

VaxDome’s platform centres on rapid transformation of a selected influenza virus strain into a safe, intranasally delivered antiviral-vaccine hybrid, known as zIFV. The company is positioning the technology for broad protection against known and unknown viruses, with influenza used as one of the disease models.

The platform is also being explored beyond infectious disease. VaxDome said zIFV may have potential in lung cancer through rapid generation of tertiary lymphoid structures within tumours and mitigation of lymphopenia. While this remains a more exploratory angle, it reflects how vaccine-like immune technologies are being studied across infectious disease and oncology settings.

Matica Bio’s role is commercially important because complex viral vaccine and vector programmes require specialised manufacturing systems. The company brings expertise across virus and cell modalities including AAV, lentivirus and oncolytic viruses, as well as single-use technologies, inline process monitoring and proprietary cell line systems.

The collaboration gives VaxDome an integrated development and manufacturing pathway under one roof, from early process development through analytical testing and cGMP clinical batch production. This is important because vaccine platform companies often face delays when process development, assay development and GMP manufacturing are fragmented across multiple vendors.

For Matica Bio, the agreement reinforces its position as a viral vector CDMO supporting next-generation vaccine and therapeutic modalities. Its Texas facility is designed to support rapid scaling from early design to clinical production, which is increasingly relevant for pandemic preparedness and emerging infectious disease programmes.
