Palmer Holland has partnered with FerrinX to distribute NanoFerrin, a precision-fermented form of lactoferrin for skincare and personal care formulations.
FerrinX developed NanoFerrin as a vegan, highly purified and bio-equivalent form of lactoferrin. The ingredient is produced through controlled microbial fermentation, avoiding animal-derived inputs and addressing limitations associated with traditional dairy-based lactoferrin sourcing.
This is relevant because biotechnology is becoming more important in beauty and personal care ingredient development. Cosmetic formulators are seeking bioactive ingredients that combine performance, sustainability, ethical sourcing and batch-to-batch consistency. Precision fermentation offers a way to produce complex biological molecules without relying on animal extraction.
Lactoferrin is a naturally occurring glycoprotein found in mammalian colostrum and other biological fluids. It is known for roles in immune defence and iron regulation, and has attracted scientific interest for dermatology and skin health applications.
Historically, commercial access to lactoferrin has been constrained by dairy sourcing. This can create challenges in scalability, cost, purity, consistency and compatibility with vegan or cruelty-free claims. FerrinX’s precision fermentation approach is intended to make lactoferrin more practical as a cosmetic ingredient at commercial scale.
NanoFerrin is positioned around three skincare benefits. The first is support for reducing dark circles and pigmentation, where iron deposits from microvascular leakage can contribute to under-eye discoloration. FerrinX says NanoFerrin binds free iron, addressing an underlying biological pathway rather than only masking pigmentation.
The second application is targeted acne support. Acne-associated bacteria rely on iron for growth and proliferation. By sequestering iron, lactoferrin may disrupt this pathway while supporting a less aggressive approach than harsher treatments that can affect skin barrier integrity. Its anti-inflammatory properties may also help reduce redness and irritation linked to breakouts.
The third area is support for hydration and skin structure. The release notes that lactoferrin can influence cellular signalling pathways associated with collagen and hyaluronic acid production, two components linked to firmness and hydration.
