Frontiers in Aging perspective explores encapsulation as a potential approach to continuous Klotho delivery and outlines the background to the company’s Klothonova collaboration

SG Austria/Austrianova, the group comprising Austrianova Singapore, Austrianova Thailand and Anovade UG, has announced the publication of a peer-reviewed perspective article in Frontiers in Aging exploring implanted Cell-in-a-Box encapsulated cells as a potential approach to sustained production of the protein Klotho.

The article, “Maintaining Klotho: preventing the body from unwinding”, discusses Klotho’s biological role, therapeutic challenges and the potential use of encapsulation technology for continuous delivery.

Klotho levels are generally diminished in older people and have been associated with several age-related conditions, including neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. The proposed approach uses encapsulated Klotho-producing cells to potentially restore levels to therapeutically beneficial amounts.

According to the company, Cell-in-a-Box encapsulated cells have previously been evaluated in human clinical trials for the delivery of other therapeutics. Those studies do not establish the safety or efficacy of the proposed Klotho application, which the perspective article presents as a potential therapeutic strategy.

“Klotho has often been described as the biological ‘stitch in time’ that prevents the body from unravelling, a metaphor that captures its role in preserving molecular harmony. Through encapsulation technology, continuous delivery of Klotho potentially may finally achieve what transient gene or protein therapies cannot: a stable restoration of youth’s physiological balance,” said Walter H. Gunzburg, Chairman of SG Austria/Austrianova.

Brian Salmons, Austrianova’s CEO, added: “This publication provides the background and future perspectives for our ongoing collaboration with Avaí Bio through our joint venture company, Klothonova. We are pleased that this high impact Frontiers journal specializing in aging and anti-aging therapies has published what we believe is a milestone publication.”
