PT. Takeda Indonesia has provided a donation of fomepizole, an approved medicine in Japan, indicated for treating ethylene glycol and methanol poisoning. Higher than a permissible concentration of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol are suspected to be responsible for the recent spike in acute kidney injury (AKI) reported in children in Indonesia, following the consumption of several paracetamol syrups, which is widely used to treat fever in children. In total, 200 vials of fomepizole treatment were donated by Takeda Indonesia.

Based on the government updates as of 26 October 2022, 269 children have been reported to be suffering from acute kidney injury, and the crisis has resulted in 157 reported deaths to date.

The government of Indonesia had approached the Embassy of Japan and Takeda for access to fomepizole, and all parties worked hand-in-hand to ensure the prioritized delivery of this emergency treatment.

Fomepizole is not registered in Indonesia and was donated to Indonesia upon request from the Ministry of Health of Indonesia and under Special-Access-Scheme.
