Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, Inc. (SSI, Columbia, Maryland, USA), a Japan-based Shimadzu Group company, has opened a satellite lab in Boston, Massachusetts to be the base of its collaborative research and development (R&D) activities on the East Coast.
Established to conduct research and development more closely linked to customers, SSI's R&D Centre consists of three bases, with the main facilities at its Maryland headquarters, a West Coast location, and this new space in Boston near the city center. The Boston lab was set up by partnering with Labshares, a shared laboratory service provider for life science companies.
The R&D Center’s Boston laboratory will focus primarily on the development of products and technologies related to mass spectrometry, making Boston, home to cutting-edge universities, research institutes, and the R&D departments of biopharmaceutical companies, an ideal location.
Development related to metabolomics and other technologies that meet the needs of pharmaceutical companies will be conducted at this lab, and prototypes will be brought to customer facilities for joint evaluation. SSI plans to install triple quadrupole and Q-TOF liquid chromatograph mass spectrometers as well as FFF-C8030 centrifugal field flow fractionation units for material analysis of pharmaceuticals.
The Shimadzu Group positioned North America as a focus area in its medium-term management plan and is working to expand its business in the pharmaceutical field. Through the R&D Centre, Shimadzu will be able to more accurately understand customer needs and accelerate product and technology development, allowing it to provide total solutions to pharmaceutical companies.
