The Albanese Labor Government is investing $6.7 million to ensure that people with rare cancers can access expert advice and the best possible care, regardless of where they live.

The Australian Rare Cancer Portal is a comprehensive resource for doctors, that brings together expert advice from Australian and international specialists on rare and less common cancers.

Rare and less common cancers made up 24% of cases diagnosed in Australia in 2024 and 33% of all cancer deaths in Australia.

Patients referred to the portal can receive expert opinions on their diagnosis and management. They can also get best evidence information, guidance on molecular testing and interpretation of results, and access to clinical trials.

The multi-million-dollar investment will also allow for a pilot in Queensland to service people in remote areas through a partnership with Cancer Alliance Queensland.

Since its establishment in 2020, the Australian Rare Cancer Portal has supported more than 1,500 patients from across the country.

The funding will be provided to BioGrid Australia to run the portal and builds on the Government’s commitment to the best health outcomes for all patients with rare and less common cancers.

Ged Kearney MP, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care said, “Rare cancers can take longer for medical practitioners to recognise and treat. This portal helps doctors and patients get to an accurate diagnosis and understand treatment options faster.”
