For strengthening vaccine production in Brazil and supporting immunisation efforts abroad

Brazil’s Minister of Health, Dr Alexandre Padilha, and Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, met on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly to reaffirm and strengthen their long-standing partnership focused on equitable access to vaccines and resilient health systems.

The meeting marked the signing of a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), building on nearly two decades of collaboration between Brazil and Gavi. The updated MoU strengthens strategic cooperation in three key areas:

  • Local vaccine manufacturing where the cooperation will seek to enhance Brazil’s vaccine ecosystem and health system resilience through Gavi’s market shaping expertise.
  • Climate adaptation through immunisation by addressing climate-sensitive diseases such as yellow fever, dengue and malaria through expanded vaccine access.
  • South–South cooperation aimed at supporting Brazil’s growing leadership in regional and global health by deepening collaboration with countries in Africa and Latin America.

Gavi currently procures millions of yellow fever vaccine doses from Bio-Manguinhos, Brazil’s public sector manufacturer. This not only supports immunisation efforts in Gavi-supported countries, but also promotes Brazil’s vaccine production capacity and export footprint. Gavi is also closely monitoring Brazil’s ongoing development of dengue vaccines, which could play an important role in responding to the growing burden of vector-borne diseases.
