Singapore: India's capital city Delhi has recorded the highest number of dengue cases this year, registering nearly 830 cases of which 778 were reported till August 29. Health authorities said that this year has seen the highest number of cases in the past five years.

North Delhi has recorded the highest cases at 352, South Delhi at 220 while East Delhi reported the lowest with 73 cases. The Indian municipal authorities have stepped up efforts to control the spread of mosquitoes and a surveillance revealed that nearly 1,48,745 houses were found breeding mosquitoes.

Dr Charan Singh, in charge of the vector-borne control program in the Delhi government, said adequate supply of platelets was being maintained. "We are monitoring the situation in all hospitals to ensure there is no lacuna in treatment facilities. Dedicated fever and dengue wards have been opened in government hospitals."

The number of cases from January 1 to August 29 for the past four years before 2015 are-33 in 2014, 162 in 2013, 13 in 2012, 73 in 2011. More than 1,000 cases were reported during the same period in 2010.
