Encephalitis claims at least 100 lives in India every year
Singapore: The recent outbreak of Encephalitis in India has claimed 102 children in the past 14 days. Majority of the cases were reported from Muzzfarpur in Bihar. However neighboring districts of Sitamarhi, West Champaran and Vaishali too were badly affected.
The new Health Minister of India, Mr Harsh Vardhan ordered extraordinary steps to eradicate the deadly disease. Mr Vardhan added that his ministry would be conducting an over drive immunization campaign, to curb the massive havoc caused by encephalitis in the country.
Under the request of Mr Vardhan, two health experts from Atlanta had arrived to assess the situation and treat the children. With the upcoming monsoons, a relief is expected as the virus would be suppressed said experts.
Expressing concern over the death toll, the health ministry assured that its encephalitis campaign would be as successful as the polio immunization drive and soon the outbreak would be halted successfully.
