Google, Facebook, Apple invite nominations for 2014 'Breakthrough Prize'

Singapore: Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences Foundation has opened its process of online nomination for the 2014 prizes. The nominations could be made using the website The prize, which will be administered by the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences Foundation, was founded during February 2013.

The foundation will award up to five prizes of $3 million each, and the 2014 prize winners will be chosen by the foundation's selection committee, which is comprised of prior recipients of the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.

The awards will be sponsored by Mr Sergey Brin (computer scientist and co-founder of Google), Ms Anne Wojcicki (American biologist, co-founder of 23andMe, and wife of Mr Brin), Mr Mark Zuckerberg (co-founder of Facebook), Ms Priscilla Chan (wife of Mr Zuckerberg) and Mr Yuri Milner (Russian entrepreneur and venture capitalist).

Anyone can nominate a candidate online and all submissions must be completed by a third party. Nominations will be accepted until October 2, 2013. All prizes will be awarded for research aimed at curing intractable diseases and extending human life, with special attention to recent discoveries. One prize sponsored by Mr Brin and Ms Wojcicki is aimed specifically at advancements in Parkinson's disease research.

Mr Arthur Levinson, chairman of Apple, Genentech, and the Breakthrough Prize in Life Science, said that, "We all benefit from the brilliance and commitment of researchers at the frontiers of medical science. This is a chance to reward their achievements and support their future work. If you think someone deserves a Breakthrough Prize, you have the power to put them in the running."
