Bangladesh based Square Pharmaceuticals is set to build a factory in Kenya’s Athi River, a town outside Kenya’s capital Nairobi. The installation of the plant is expected to boost Kenya’s drug manufacturing profile in East Africa.
The establishment of the Kenya plant will also facilitate skills and technology transfer. Over the last three decades, Bangladesh has developed a strong reputation in the pharmaceutical industry, manufacturing up to 97 per cent of the drugs used locally.
Square Pharmaceuticals produces a range of drugs, focusing on those that relieve digestive distress, such as anti-acids, digestive stimulants and anti-diarrheal medicine. The company also produces herbal products and pesticides.
The company has extended its range of services towards the highway of global market. It pioneered exports of medicines from Bangladesh in 1987 and has been exporting antibiotics and other pharmaceutical products. Square Pharma has 700 product approvals for export markets and 900 product approvals for Bangladesh market.
