Singapore: The Saudi Arabian Health Ministry has notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of one more new case of MERS recently. The latest developments boost the number of MERS-CoV infections in Saudi Arabia to 721 and its death toll to 295. Currently, 39 people are being treated for their illnesses.

The Ministry also reported two fresh cases from UAE. They are the first cases to be reported from UAE since mid-June, lifting the country's case count to 71.

"Though MERS cases currently appear to be abating and less infectious, they have not fully subsided and hence Asian countries must be vigilant and take necessary precautions," WHO said in a statement.

Mr Mark Jacobs, director for communicable diseases, WHO said that MERS was not very contagious as relatives of the infected people did not contract the disease.

WHO's comments came after the Philippines health Ministry issued a MERS advisory to its Hajj pilgrims, suggesting that they reconsider their pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

Mr Jacobs said that, "The virus spread in Asia is very unlikely, however since the mode of transmission of the virus is unknown, WHO cannot predict how the virus will spread."

He further emphasized that if the virus spread, risk to Asian countries is huge and hence health authorities must stay vigilant.

Many Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh have reported MERS cases so far. Mr Jacobs advised Asians travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj in October to take precautions, including proper hygiene and staying away from people exhibiting MERS-like symptoms.
