Singapore: A senior WHO official said that India will soon issue guidelines to regulate the use of antibiotics and their prescription.

Speaking at a Media workshop a day before the 68TH Session of WHO's South-East Asia Regional Committee meeting, Mr Rajesh Bhatia, chief scientific advisor to WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Poonam Khetrapal Singh, said, "A Standard treatment guideline needs to be developed. I understand that India is ready (with the guidelines) and ready to issue it."

Mr Bhatia said, "Nearly 10 million people worldwide will die due to the antibiotic resistance by 2050. Its the single biggest threat to mankind's efforts. The government needs to be committed and address this issue urgently."

WHO further added that to slow down the development of antibiotic resistance, it is important to use antibiotics in the right way, at the right time for the right duration.
