African Diaspora Biotech Summit 2017 to be held in Cambridge

African Diaspora Biotech Summit 2017, which will take place at the University of Cambridge, UK on 4th April 2017, is a flagship initiative of JR Biotek Foundation.

It was developed to inspire early-career life science and biotech professionals (including research scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs, policy experts, and present and future bio-industry leaders) from Africa and the diaspora to help find practical solutions that will contribute to Africa's sustainable development. Carol Ibe of the Department of Plant Sciences will be the key convenor of this mega event.

The organisers are looking for students and early/mid-career professionals in the field of biotechnology and applied biosciences, STEM, policy, economics, law, international development, journalism and other related disciplines across the UK, Europe, USA and around the world who are interested and passionate about helping African countries achieve sustainable development through enhanced research capacity, innovation, infrastructure development, policy development and commercialization/entrepreneurship.

Seventy candidates will be selected to participate in the Summit, which will trigger discussion on how Africa's present and future leaders and all stakeholders, including the African diaspora can work collaboratively to strengthen research capacity building, innovation and commercialization so as to create opportunities for employment, investment and sustained economic growth in Africa.

The Summit will focus on four major areas including Food security in sub-Saharan Africa, African tertiary education system, effective policy development and implementation and the role and contribution of African women and the African diaspora.

The Summit will include panel-led discussions and keynote addresses, which will set the stage for discussions about the urgent need to strengthen biotech and bioscience education, training and capacity building; research innovation, and biotech commercialization in Africa.
