Fake drugs worth $180Mn seized in China
Singapore: China's Ministry of Public Security cracked the whip on counterfeiting of drugs and detained close to 2,000 people in a nationwide crackdown. Some of the drugs that are been counterfeited even include those that can be used to treat cancer. The ministry in a statement on its website revealed that it seized about $180 million worth of fake medicine and false trademark logos.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the statement issued by the ministry said that the fake drugs were sold for the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, skin diseases and other 'complicated illnesses', including cancer.
The problem of drug counterfeiting has been a considerable problem in China and the dragon nation has been unable to successfully combat the production and sale of fake drugs. The director of China's food and drug agency was executed in 2007 for approving deadly fake medicine in exchange for cash. The government has introduced more regulations in the recent years in order to tighten safety in its drug and food industries.
